Jasper Attorney Ed Marger said he will use his appointment to the governing body of the state Bar association to strike a balance between professional treatment of the public by lawyers and ethical treatment of lawyers by the Bar.
Marger’s term to the 150 member Board of Governor’s of the state Bar, representing the Appalachian Circuit, will run for two years. Marger was appointed to the elected position to fill an unexpired term.
The state Bar of Georgia is governed by the State Supreme Court which works with the Bar association to encourage professionalism among attorneys and handle discipline problems.
Although Marger is a freshman on the Georgia association, he brings eight years of experience from the Florida Bar Association Board of Governors.
He has served as the chairman of both the Environmental Law Committee and Aviation Law Committee for the Georgia Bar and has been the representative of the 16,000 out-of-state members to the Florida Bar.
Marger said the underlying purpose of the Bar association is to help lawyers function better so the needs of the public in turn are served more effectively.
"The great dichotomy is to satisfy the public and at the same time help lawyers be better lawyers," he said. "Lawyers need to be disciplined when discipline is needed but not scape-goated to satisfy a screaming public."
